Microchipping your pet has been touted as a good method for helping to quickly reunite people with their lost pets. For a Pekingese named Buddy, however, it took 6 years before he was found and returned to his original pet parent.  Ben Choi from Queens NY lost Buddy in 2008 and searched far and wide for his pet by putting up lost dog posters and knocking on neighbors doors.

You can imagine Ben Choi’s amazement when he received a call this past Friday that his dog had been found. The call came from the Jackson Heights veterinarian and they told Ben Choie ,”We have your dog”, as reported by NY Daily News.  Hayek, a seventy eight year old man who had been caring for Buddy had taken him to the vet for treatment but was unaware that the dog had been microchipped.  The man quickly picked up Buddy and abruptly left the vet’s office upon learning about the microchip.

Ben Choi hired a couple of detectives to negotiate with Hayek and convince him to give Buddy up to his rightful guardian.  It appears that Hayek had taken good care of Buddy and the man was sadden to have had to return Buddy but he acknowledged that it was the right thing to do.
