Dogs can jet down a trail with speed that’s remarkable. If you’ve ever seen one on the chase of a rabbit or squirrel, you know you don’t have to be watching greyhounds at the track to see true artistry and speed.

We’ve had dogs that, seemingly, could go on forever chasing a tennis ball or Frisbee. But what breeds are truly the fastest?

Greyhound

  • Greyhound – There’s no question about this breed that sits in the number one pole position. They are bred for speed and can run as fast as 43 miles per hour. There is an entire racing culture in Florida that lives at the track to watch Greyhounds chase an artificial rabbit around an oval. Go figure.

Saluki

  • Saluki – This spot is up for grabs between the Saluki and the Vizsla. Both love to run but it’s the Saluki who is related to the Greyhound and can out pace them in endurance runs because their feet are more heavily padded.

Vizsla

  • Vizsla – This Hungarian born breed is fast on land and water. Just like Border Collies, they can run and turn on a dime.

Jack Russell Terrier

  • Jack Russell Terrier – This little guy was born to do two things: Dig and run. Because they are so compact and close to the ground, they excel at canine sports like agility and flyball. Small, yes – but they have been recorded at 38 miles per hour.

Whippet

  • Whippet – These dogs can run 200 yards in about 12 seconds! They are a cross between a Greyhound, Italian Greyhound and a terrier.

  • Border Collie – As you can imagine, these dogs need to be swift and sure in order to care for their flocks whether that’s sheep, cows or llamas. They do particularly well in canine sports like flying disc competitions and field trials. While these dogs are great companion animals, they need a job and will herd anything they can find including you and your kids.
