Allergy Symptoms In Dogs
The signs of skin allergies include:
• Excessive scratching
• Raw, red spots on the skin
• Loss of fur
• Frequent diarrhea
• Vomiting
• Unexplained weight loss
• Lethargic
Of course, you want to take your pet to your veterinarian for treatment, and many times Cortisone will be used to treat these allergic reactions, especially inflammation and itching. The red sores can be treated by using Apis mellifica (bee venom) to help relieve the burning and itching that causes the red sores – you may notice the itching gets worse at night, leading to swelling of the face.
If your dog’s allergic reactions include restlessness, chills, dry skin or itching skin, you should consider using Arsenicum album to treat these symptoms. It is important to treat these symptoms early so that sores do not develop. Formica rufa (red ant) is used when your dog has a stinging sensation, severe itching, red skin, burning skin or if a rash forms.
Herbal Remedies
Improper organ function and a weakened immune system can lead to allergies in dogs. Your dog’s overall health and immune system can be strengthened by using herbal remedies – here is a list of herbs to consider:
BURDOCK ROOT – helps eliminate toxins and cleans the blood stream through sweat and urine excretions. It can be given daily as a dietary supplement.
DANDELION – is an herb that helps eliminate toxins from the liver and improve overall liver function.
YELLOW DOCK – also eliminates toxins.
ECHINACEA – a natural way to strengthen the immune system.
LICORICE ROOT – is as potent as corticosteroids because it contains a compound known as glycrrhizin. It is a compound that stimulates the adrenal glands in dogs and encourages the production of the body’s own natural corticosteroids. It also works as an anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and also strengthens the immune system. It works very well to help alleviate the itching.
NETTLE – is a potent herbal allergy treatment that helps stimulate blood circulation in your dog; plus it is an antibiotic. It works as a great treatment for itching or other allergic reactions, including the development of eczema.
SARSAPARILLA – is an antibacterial herb that is used to treat skin conditions.
Always follow label directions on all herbal remedies and, if possible, look for a certified Herbalist or Naturopath in your area that has a proven track record in treating animals successfully with natural remedies. Of course, you do not want to let your pet suffer in any way, so it is important to look into all treatment options.
