What Does Nulo™ Dog Food Have To Do With Ironman Triathlons?

What does Nulo™ Dog Food have to do with Ironman Triathlons? At first, I was confused. My wife participated in the grueling Half Ironman at Augusta GA, and came home with a variety of nutritional samples – and one of those samples was Nulo Dog Food. Huh?

I do a good bit of research before giving my dogs any food. One of my favorite go-to resources for in-depth information about dog food is the Dog Food Advisor website. From there, I discovered the following about Nulo:

  • Premium pet food earning five stars – the highest rating
  • High Quality, Grain-free pet food
  • Contains NO by-products, wheat or soy

My interest perked. Upon further research I discovered:

  • Nulo blends are made and distributed in smaller batches to ensure they spend less time on the shelf and taste better when they land in the bowl.
  • Nulo Pet Food is based in Austin, TX and remains one of the few independently owned pet food companies in North America.

Soon, I understood what it had to do with triathlons. Nulo is inspired by world class athletes. You and your pet can be #HealthierTogether when you share the passion of an active and healthy lifestyle.  Just as proper nutrition can help you (or a triathlete) excel in your sport, Nulo provides a unique formula for your active canine partner – high meat protein dog food with low carbs & low glycemic ingredients.

Rio And Fuel For His Inner Athlete

Ironically, a few weeks later, I was asked by Nulo to try out their dog food line. My whole family is active – that includes our dogs.  So I eagerly jumped at the opportunity to participate in a Nulo dog food review. Nulo is available at PetSmart in a variety of recipe options  – fresh chicken, lamb and salmon and they are paired with tasty things like apples, carrots, lentils, and sweet potato. All of which I knew Rio would enjoy.

Rio, my stocky one and 1/2-year-old black Labrador Retriever, has a spirit for exploring. Named Rio (‘River’ in Spanish) because we knew he’d love water and the outdoors. He is a true athlete – although he is about as graceful as a water buffalo when he barrels through the water chasing after a thrown stick.

FYI… Nulo also has a premium line of cat food. Looks like my cat is trying to give me a hint….

Nutrition – Most Important When Long Distance Hiking With A Dog

Hiking is one of our favorite activities. Rio and I have conquered many miles across the trails of Ga as well as in western NC. Hiking can burn a ton of calories. Add in a difficult terrain, with a steep incline and a backpack – and you’re talking about a serious workout. Other than ensuring we have the right gear for the hike, the most important part is making sure we have proper nutrition.

We have several hiking trips planned so I was anxious to transition Rio over to Nulo. However, Rio’s GI tract is sensitive. But thanks to Nulo’s patented BC30 Probiotics, he transitioned smoothly over to Nulo with no problems – solid stools (fist pump!).

Climb Hard And Enjoy The View

We’ve been hitting the trails this fall and Rio has done well on Nulo. His energy and stamina are great. It can be a lot of work to climb a mountain – but there is nothing better than enjoying the vistas with my trail partner and furry friend.  There are many more mountains for us to climb and it’s clear that I will depend on Nulo to keep Rio in optimal shape for future hikes.
