Top 10 Non-Shedding Dog Breeds

Dog’s Who Shed Very Little Or Not At All

There are many breeds that shed very little hair and/or skin cells.  These are perfect for allergy sufferers who wish to enjoy the love and companionship of a dog without the burden of aggravated allergies.  Some allergic reactions are mild and may be controlled with over the counter allergy pills, but others are severe enough to prevent people from seeking companionship of dogs that constantly shed a large quantity of hair, as many do.

If you think having a non-shedding breed will restrict you to hairless or short haired dogs only, prepare to be pleasantly surprised.  Non-shedding dogs are considered “hypoallergenic” and include dogs with little dander and that do not drool a lot, since allergies can extend to dander (skin flakes) and drool.  Here are the Top 10 Non-Shedding Dog Breeds.

West Highland Terrier

Cute and cuddly, these small white haired dogs do not require extensive grooming and shed very little.  They require daily walks and make very entertaining pets.  They are very friendly, loyal and loving and even make great watch dogs (ie. alarm dogs).

Poodle

Poodles come in three sizes – toy (max 10”), miniature (max 15”) and standard (over 15”).  Poodles are extremely intelligent and loving and one of the most popular breeds worldwide.  Poodles can be left naturally curly or groomed in various styles, one being the popular pom tail and ears.  Poodles also lack that “dog smell” as they are nearly odor free.

Chinese Crested

Of course there are the “hairless” (or mostly hairless) breeds to choose from.  The Chinese Crested has tufts of hair on the head, tail and feet.  Frequent competitors in “Ugly Dog” contests, what it lacks in beauty, it makes up for with its sweet personality.

American Hairless Terrier

The American Hairless Terrier is intelligent, playful and loving.  Unlike other dogs, they do sweat and will need a sweater or other clothing in the winter to keep warm and sunscreen in the summer to prevent burning.  They do well in apartments as long as they are walked daily and they should be bathed weekly.
