Adding a rock to your pet fish or reptile’s aquarium is a great way to enhance it’s overall aesthetics. Rocks and stones have small pores and crevices where tiny little microscopic creatures may be hiding, including parasites, mold and bacteria. So you’ll want to make sure your rock is sterile before placing it in the tank otherwise you risk exposing your pet to something that could make him ill. Household cleaning items may kill the pathogens but can also be poisonous to your pet. Follow these tips on how to disinfect aquarium rocks.
CLEANING TIP:
BAKE: Wrap the rock in aluminum foil and then back it in the oven at 250 degrees for about 30 minutes. This will destroy all those microorganism. Make sure you allow the rock to completely cool before placing it into the aquarium.
BOIL: For smaller rocks boiling would be the preferred method. Boiling also destroys chlorine so it’s okay to use regular tap water. Place the rock in a large pan. Bring to a boil and let it simmer for 30 mins. Remember to let the rock cool completely before placing it in the aquarium.
