German Shepherd Owners Give Up Dog
Gemma, a white German Shepherd, had a severe case of Demodectic Mange that covered 70% of her body. Demodectic Mange in an infestation of mites on the dogs skin – it’s a treatable condition but instead of taking her to the vet, her family did not want to deal with her so they dropped her off at the shelter. Gemma was in pain and looked in horrible shape.
Gemma Finds Caring Friends
When a kind volunteer at the shelter, Jolene, saw Gemma she knew she had to do something.
Jolene, also an adoption counselor at St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary (a part of Lange Foundation,) an animal rescue based in Canyon Country, took in Gemma and immediately started treatment for her condition. Jolene was developing a bond with Gemma and felt so compelled to help, that she took on the nearly 24 hour care of Gemma – providing her with medications and baths.
Within weeks, she was clearly healing. Her fur was growing back and she was putting on weight. A little too much weight. Jolene found out soon enough that Gemma was pregnant and had been pregnant even before she left the shelter. Gemma gave birth to 5 healthy puppies. The puppies were adopted while Gemma had to continue her treatment for mange.
But soon enough, Gemma found her perfect home too.
About Lange Foundation and St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary
The Lange Foundation (a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization) was founded in 1993 by Gillian Lange, recipient of the 1980 City of Los Angeles St. Francis of Assisi award for her rescue work with impounded animals since 1974. Lange founded the Amanda Foundation in 1975.
To date the two Foundations have rescued and placed over 25,000 cats, dogs and horses who would otherwise have been destroyed in overcrowded public animal shelters. Lange and a group of dedicated staff and volunteers works and will continue working everyday to help homeless animals.
