We usually think of our dogs as having a job or needing one, but the only job we ever assign to cats is catching rodents. However, throughout history there have been cats with jobs, some mundane, some exceptional. What are these jobs and who are these exceptional cats?

Mitilda
The Algonquin Hotel in NY City is partly famous for their feline resident – Matilda. She greets the guests and according to Forbes she generates over $1M in marketing exposure. In fact, since 1930 there have been 3 different Matilda’s and 7 different males – Hamlets – that have been appointed to this important role at the Algonquin.

Morris the Cat

Most Americans are familiar with Morris. He is quite famous for being finicky and only liking one form of cat food. Morris spent his life in front of the cameras and was quite a celebrity.

Rusik – Russia Sturgeon Smugglers Cat

Russia’s first ‘sniffer’ cat held an important role in helping to stop the illegal trade of caviar and Sturgeon, an endangered fish species called. Rusik was so good at his job that he was considered better than the police’s canine.  Unfortunately, Rusik was killed when he was run over during an inspection. The Russian police are calling it a contract murder. The cat was killed a few days starting to work. Rusik was a stray cat that the police adopted and trained. The police had hoped that Rusik would help them to catch the culprits in a smuggling ring.

Japanese Rail Station Master Cat

Tama, a Japanese cat that lived near the Kishi Station. She was made station master and was so popular that the dying station was kept open. Many tourists went to see Tama. Her job was to meet the passengers. She was responsible for a 17% increase in ridership.

Service Cat

Thula is a Maine Coon and he is a service cat for Iris Grace in Leicestershire, England. Iris is a four year old little girl who has autism. Iris has never spoken, but Thula calms her down and reduces her anxieties. He is helping Iris to become more social and interactive with other people.
